OVERVIEW
An ancient farming village reinvented as an understatedly luxurious hotel surrounded by ancient oak trees, olive groves and sun-drenched vineyards, Sao Lourenco do Barrocal is a 780-hectare estate featuring 22 rooms, two suites and 16 cottages. The expansive property boasts a Suzanne Kaufmann spa (known for her acclaimed range of plant-based, organic products), field to fork dining, swimming pool, bicycles and horses to explore the expansive grounds and a beautifully curated shop selling local pottery, textiles, olive oil and wine.
WHY WE LOVE IT
We love eighth-generation owner José Antonio’s commitment to sustainability; the wine, olive oils and vegetables used at the hotel all come from the estate itself with an effort to source all ingredients locally where possible. The property also has an extensive waste management program which includes the recycling of waste water and all domestic hot water is provided by solar energy.
LOCATION
Sao Lourenco do Barrocal is located a 90-minute drive from Lisbon in Alentejo, in the foothills of the medieval village of Monsaraz near Alqueva Lake.
